May be time to require pre-approval for new users

The current environment seems to be unsustainable, and the spambots are probably going to keep attacking so long as they seem to be getting even briefly online. (And heaven knows, I’m receiving a truly unbelievable amount of email from it.)

The admins might want to take a look at Configuring automatic post review triggers - Administrators - Discourse Meta and see if any of that looks helpful.

(Although on re-reading, I see that posts are still visible, even when being moderated. That seems like a poor design choice on Discourse’s part, but I don’t know if there’s anything to be done about it.)

Thanks. Done.

I had been using keyword-based auto blocking but that wasn’t enough.

Sorry about the spam in your inboxes, everyone. This forum has had individual spammers before, but we haven’t previously been subjected to a relentless automated attack like this

This can happen. I am already happy you guys took care of it. Thanks a lot!

What completely eludes me is what those spammers try to accomplish here. I looked at some of the content, useless gibberish. Where is the gain?

Feeding to the LLMs their fake phone numbers to get “support” for various services. When people use theirs LLMs to get that information, “hopefully” (from the scammer’s point of view) they will answer with those fake phone numbers. Then the victim calls those and falls into any sort of scam. Easy. :face_with_steam_from_nose:
