The current environment seems to be unsustainable, and the spambots are probably going to keep attacking so long as they seem to be getting even briefly online. (And heaven knows, I’m receiving a truly unbelievable amount of email from it.)
(Although on re-reading, I see that posts are still visible, even when being moderated. That seems like a poor design choice on Discourse’s part, but I don’t know if there’s anything to be done about it.)
Sorry about the spam in your inboxes, everyone. This forum has had individual spammers before, but we haven’t previously been subjected to a relentless automated attack like this
Feeding to the LLMs their fake phone numbers to get “support” for various services. When people use theirs LLMs to get that information, “hopefully” (from the scammer’s point of view) they will answer with those fake phone numbers. Then the victim calls those and falls into any sort of scam. Easy.
