The free Kindle for Windows PC app works well, and it allows one to underline and take notes, both of which are persistent. There are also free Kindle apps for Android and IOS. Copying code into an editor requires much reformatting,but the present edition is a huge improvement over what it used to be. Generally, Kindle versions are less expensive than print books plus shipping. Lastly, for most, but not all, expensive technical books, Amazon allows rent-to-purchase of the Kindle edition.
